Cosmetic assessment of triterpenoids in Ilex rotunda
Ilex (Aquifoliaceae) species are distributed widely in Eastern Asia (Japan, China, Taiwan and Indonesia), and some are used extensively in folk medicine.
In this paper, seven tiriterpenoids and two phenolic compounds were isolated from the fruits of Ilex rotunda. These compounds were determined based on UV, MS, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopic data as 19-hydroxy-olean 12-ene-28-oic acid (1), 23-hydroxyl methyl olean-12-ene-28-oic acid (2), 3-O-β-glucuronopyranosyl-23-hydroxyl methyl olean-12-ene-28-oic acid (3), 3-O-β-glucurono- pyranosyl-19-hydroxy-23-hydroxyl methyl olean-12-ene-28-oic acid 28-O-β-glucopyranoside (4), 3-O-β-glucuronopyranosyl oleanolic acid (5), 3-O-β-glucuronopyranosyl-olean-12-ene-28-oic acid 28-O-β-glucopyranoside (6), 3-O-β-glucuropyranosyl-19-O-β-glucopyranosyl-23-hydroxyl methyl olean-12-ene-28-oic acid (7), syringin (8), and chlorogenic acid (9). In the bioassay, remarkable melanization inhibitory effect was found in compounds 5 and 7, n-hexane extract, and methanol eluate of an Amberlite XAD-2. Among these isolated compound, 7 is a new triterpenoid.
