Antioxidant properties of Juniperus excelsa M.-Bieb. subsp. polycarpos

Butyl-hydroxytoluene (BHT) is one of the major synthetic antioxidants with a wide rang usage. Replacement of artificial antioxidants with natural antioxidants is highly considered. The boiled leaves or fruits of Juniperus excelsa M.-Bieb. subsp. polycarpos combined with animal fixed oil are used for treatment of ear ache in Hormozgan province, south of Iran. Ethanol extract of J. excelsa was fractionated based on increasing the polarity. The antioxidant activity of J. excelsa M.-Bieb subsp. polycarpos was investigated [1,2]. Statistical analysis was done by one way ANOVA. The reducing power of ethyl acetate fraction was more than butanol. The IC50 of ethyl acetate fraction (199.9±12.8) was less than buthanol (>400) fraction (P<0.0001). In other words, radical scavenging activity of ethyl acetate fraction was more than butanol. The IC50 of BHT and gallic acid were found to be 63.17±0.9 and 2.49±0.06, respectively. Ethyl acetate fraction displayed a remarkable prevention of lipid peroxidation (Antioxidant activity coefficient, AAC=960±20) which was more than butanol (AAC=550.7±15.3) fraction (P<0. 01). Totally, ethyl acetate fraction exhibited higher antioxidant activity.
