Effects of ethanolic root and leaf extracts of Cissampelos mucronata on length of gestation period

Following our earlier report of the in vitro uterine-relaxant property of the ethanolic root extract of Cissampelos mucronata [1], the effect of the same extract on length of gestation period was studied in pregnant albino rats, and compared to that of the ethanolic leaf extract. Graded doses (200–1,000mg/kg/d) of the extracts were given p.o. to specified groups of rats (190–250g; n=5) from the 19th day of gestation until littering. Salbutamol (0.2mg/kg/d) and 3% Tween 85 (5ml/kg/d) served as controls. Mean length of gestation period (in days±SEM) was determined, and the value for each of the test groups was tested for statistically significant difference relative to the controls. At all doses tested, the extracts extended the mean gestation period relative to control values. While the extension was significant (p<0.05) for all doses tested relative to 3% Tween 85, it was so only at 400mg/kg/d of the root extract, relative to salbutamol. Although the study is a preliminary one, these results suggest a tocolytic effect for the extract, which might prove helpful in the management of obstetric emergencies.
