Notoginseng [Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F.H. Chen] as a well-known medicinal herb in China is mostly cultivated in Yunnan province. So far, more than 60 dammarane saponins have been reported. In our continuing study on this herb, 2 new dammarane-type saponins [notoginsenosides FP1 (1) and FP2 (2)] were isolated from the fruit pedicels, along with 22 known compounds. Based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the crude herb is generally used after passing through the treating process to have specific properties and functions. The crude notoginseng root is used for injuries from falls and cardiovascular diseases, whereas the treated notoginseng is considered as a tonic. From the steam-treated notoginseng, 5 new dammarane monodesmosides [notoginsenoside ST-1 to ST-5 (3 to 7)] were identified together with 26 known compounds. The distinct difference of saponin composition in crude and steam-treated notoginseng is found. By means of HPLC method, the saponin composition in different parts of the herb, different cultivated ages of the undergrounds part, as well as the steam-treated form was determined. These research results are useful for the quality control of this herb.
