Lithium in der Präventivmedizin und mitochondrialen Medizin – ein Update

Das Alkalimetall Lithium wirkt psychovegetativ ausgleichend und entspannend, bei Menschen mit bipolarer Störung wird es therapeutisch eingesetzt. Höhere Gehalte im Trinkwasser werden mit einer geringeren Häufigkeit von Demenz in Verbindung gebracht. Tierversuche und In-vitro-Studien zeigen außerdem positive Effekte von Lithium in niedriger Dosierung u. a. auf kognitive, metabolische und mitochondriale Funktionen sowie antidiabetogene und antiinflammatorische Effekte. Ein wichtiger Wirkmechanismus ist dabei die Inhibierung der Signalkaskade Glykogensynthase-Kinase 3. Es gilt, die Daten aus Tierstudien durch humane klinische Interventionsstudien zu bestätigen und den Lithiumstatus der Bevölkerung zu objektivieren.
