Typ-1-Diabetes (T1D) wird als Folge einer Autoimmunreaktion verstanden, die sich gegen die insulinproduzierenden Betazellen richtet. Diese befinden sich in den Langerhans-Inseln im Pankreas. Die Erkrankung wurde lange Zeit als eine im Kindesalter beginnende Erkrankung betrachtet, die eine lebenslange Insulinbehandlung erfordert. Neuere Studien zeigen jedoch, dass ein Krankheitsbeginn im Erwachsenenalter ebenso häufig ist wie im Kindesalter [1]. Weltweit wird ein Anstieg der Inzidenz um mindestens 66% zwischen den Jahren 2020 und 2040 erwartet. Zudem sind geschätzt 63–70% der Todesfälle bei Personen unter 25 Jahren mit TD 1 auf eine fehlende Diagnose zurückzuführen [2].
