Introduction

This pictoral review aims to give an overview of common pitfalls and mimics in sport imaging of the pelvis using a case-based approach.

Normal variants of the hip are frequently mistaken for pathological conditions, emphasizing the importance of recognizing them during hip imaging. Understanding these variations is crucial in avoiding misdiagnosis or unnecessary treatment. Additionally, it is noteworthy that these normal variants can become symptomatic and may coexist with pathological conditions.

Beyond normal anatomical variations, several pathologies such as osteoid osteoma or infections can mimic sports injuries, while sports-related injuries may be misinterpreted as more serious conditions like tumors. This is why clinical correlation is of utmost importance. Conversely, misleading clinical information is an important pitfall, emphasizing the need for unbiased evaluation.

Finally, an inappropriate choice of imaging modalities and satisfaction of search are common contributors to misdiagnosis.
