Abstract

The current classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions provides four stages of disease severity (stage I-IV) as well as three grades of disease progression (grade A, B, C) of periodontitis. The first guideline for the therapy of periodontitis (stage I-III) describes the concept of a step-wise periodontal therapy (step 1–4), and it has been established by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and implemented in Germany by the German Society of Periodontology (DG PARO) in 2020 and 2021, respectively. In 2022, the guideline for the therapy of periodontitis stage IV was adopted by the EFP, and different treatment concepts, including multiple dental disciplines, were develolped based on the existing evidence. This article should provide an overview on the classification of periodontal diseases and describe the systematic periodontal therapy in the light of orthodontic treatment of patients with periodontitis.
