Abstract

At a joint consensus conference of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) in November 2017, a new scheme for classifying periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions was established. According to this new classification scheme, there are now only three forms of periodontitis: 1) periodontitis, 2) necrotizing periodontal diseases, and 3) periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic disease. Each periodontitis can be assigned a stage, a grade, and the extent or distribution pattern. The stage of periodontitis is determined by the severity of the disease and the complexity of the treatment management. The grade of periodontitis mainly provides information about the rate of progression of the disease. The new classification scheme is complex, but represents significant progress compared to the old classification of periodontal diseases. The new classification scheme defines gingival and periodontal health for the first time, takes into account the complexity of treatment, and also acknowledges the possible influence of risk factors on disease progression.
