Two seminal events marked the development of audiology as a profession in the USA: (1) the introduction of the first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) training program in audiology at Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois, and (2) the development of the first audiological doctorate (AuD: Doctor of Audiology) training program at the Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, Texas. In this paper, I trace the events leading up to the birth of each degree. They are both interesting stories.
