Abstract

The first descriptions of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, initially exclusively dermatomyositides, were published more than 150 years ago (E. L. Wagner, C E. Potain, H. Unverricht). In 1916, G. Stertz was the first to assume a relationship between cancer and dermatomyositis. The characteristic cutaneous manifestations and histopathological abnormalities were also recognised early, whereas the typical proximal muscle weakness was not mentioned regularly in case reports during the first decades. The therapeutic options of glucocorticoids were described in the U.S.A. only 70 years ago; a still accepted classification of inflammatory myopathies was proposed by Bohan et al. in 1977. This review presents the first descriptions of diagnosis and treatment of non-infectious inflammatory myopathies.
