Noam Peleg et al. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and risk of neoplastic progression in patients with Barrett’s esophagus

An analysis in 324 individuals with Barrett’s esophagus showed that a simple inflammation marker, the peripheral blood neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), was predictive of progression to neoplasia. In particular, an NLR above 2.4 was associated with a 3-fold increase in progression to high grade dysplasia or adenocarcinoma during follow-up. This finding was consistent even in patients with nondysplastic Barrett’s esophagus at baseline.
