ABSTRACT

Iodine is an essential trace element that does not only play a role in thyroid metabolism. Much of the total iodine occurrence in the human organism is found in extrathyroid tissues, especially in the mammary glands. Especially in pregnancy and lactation, it is linked to lipids and iodine lactones are formed. These influence the growth regulation and the apoptosis behavior of the mammary gland cells. Other iodine compounds, such as povidone iodine or Lugol's solution, also show tumor cell toxicity in animal searches and on human breast cancer cell lines. Against the background of this research, an adequate supply of iodine is vital for women and a means of primary and secondary prophylaxis. The recommendations of the nutritional societies regarding iodine should therefore be revised.
