Mit der weltweit hohen Prävalenz oraler Erkrankungen sind deren Therapie und Prävention als Kernherausforderungen für die zahnmedizinische Versorgung anzusehen [1]. Während sowohl für Karies als auch für Parodontitis erfolgversprechende Therapiestrategien bestehen, sind der langfristige Erhalt stabiler Verhältnisse sowie die Vorbeugung der Erkrankung beim Gesunden (Primärprävention) bisher als nicht ausreichend einzustufen [2]. Mundgesundheit, welche die FDI World Dental Federation als Freiheit von physischen oralen Erkrankungen, aber auch psychosozialen Einflussfaktoren sowie funktionellen Aspekten definiert, stellt dabei einen komplexen Zustand dar [3]. Dies erfordert in der Vorbeugung oraler Erkrankungen einen Paradigmenwechsel von einem chirurgischen, rein befundbezogenen zu einem medizinischen und demnach fallbezogenen Vorgehen [2].
