Abstract

Ectoparasitoses are common and are mainly caused by insects and mites, rarely by larvae of worms. While humans are also the real and only hosts for lice (head, clothes and pubic lice) and scabies mites, humans are an accidental host for the temporary ectoparasites such as fleas, bedbugs and tropical rat mites.

Diagnostic criteria of infestations include the clinic (morphology, predilection sites) as well as patient´s history (contact persons affected, contact with animals). Therapeutically, to kill the permanent parasites, chemically defined agents or dimethicones (for the treatment of pediculosis capitis) are used, while the skin reactions due to temporary parasites are treated symptomatically. The source of the parasites must be considered and requires the treatment of the animals and those of the environment, which is carried out by veterinarian or “parasites controllers”. In the following, dermatitis caused by mites will be focussed.
