Abstract

Menyanthes trifoliata L., the bogbean

The leaves and rhizomes of the bogbean, Menyanthes trifoliata L. (Menyanthaceae), growing in peat bogs and marshes, have been used in the folk medicine as a remedy for the treatment of loss of appetite and for dyspeptic complaints for a long time which can be explained by the presence of bitter substances with a secoiridoid structure which are also known to occur in other bitter drugs. Apart from bitter substances, polyphenolic compounds and triterpenes are important ingredients in both herbal drugs. Extracts prepared from the leaves exhibited antioxidative, antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects; whereas for extracts prepared from the rhizomes, antiinflammatory, antioxidative and antimicrobial activities as well as cytotoxic effects against cancer cell lines were reported. Precise toxicological data is lacking for both herbal drugs. Moreover, clinical studies on the effects of bogbean extracts are not available. Thus, the application of the leaves and rhizomes or the extracts prepared thereof cannot be recommended apart from the “traditional use” in the treatment of loss of appetite and for dyspeptic complaints.
