Unter einer frühen intrauterinen Wachstumsretardierung (IUGR) versteht man eine schwerwiegende Verlaufsform der Plazentainsuffizienz, welche sich vor 34 + 0 SSW klinisch manifestiert und geprägt ist durch eine chronische fetale Hypoxämie. Diese Frühform ist zwar seltener als die späte IUGR, findet sich aber immerhin in 1 – 2% aller Schwangerschaften und weist ein schwerwiegenderes Spektrum an Komplikationen für Mutter und Kind auf.
