ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Hafer spielte viele Jahrzehnte lang eine wichtige Rolle in der diätetischen Therapie von Diabetes mellitus. Mit der Entdeckung des Insulins durch Frederick G. Banting und Charles H. Best 1921 und im weiteren Verlauf durch die Verbreitung oraler Antidiabetika geriet Hafer als Therapeutikum zunehmend in Vergessenheit. Doch in den vergangenen 15 Jahren erlebt er eine regelrechte Renaissance, insbesondere in der Behandlung der Insulinresistenz bei Diabetes mellitus Typ 2. Standen zunächst die guten klinischen Erfahrungen im Vordergrund, konnten in den letzten Jahren immer mehr wissenschaftliche Daten zur Wirksamkeit sowie Erkenntnisse zu möglichen Wirkmechanismen auf molekularbiologischer Ebene gewonnen werden.
