Definiert man den Begriff ‚Rückenschmerz‘ (lat. Dorsalgie), so handelt es sich um Beschwerden, die von der Wirbelsäule ausgehen oder diese betreffen. Der Begriff ‚Rückenschmerz‘ umschreibt entsprechend einen Symptomkomplex und keine spezifische Diagnose. Die Ursachen hierfür können vielfältig sein und den Untersucher vor eine diagnostische Herausforderung stellen. Die Grundprinzipien der Diagnostik bei Rückenschmerzen sollen im Folgenden beschrieben werden.
