Abstract

Orthodontists often encounter patients with missing teeth. The maxillary lateral incisor is the second most common congenitally absent tooth. There are 3 treatment options for replacing missing lateral incisors. They include canine substitution, a tooth-supported restoration or a single-tooth implant. Managing patients with congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors raises several important issues involving type of malocclusion, amount of space, profile, smile line, as well as shape and color of the canines. The present article will discuss advantages and disadvantages for orthodontic space closure and also for space opening.
