Eine punktuelle Verfärbung der Zahnkrone, eine unerwartete Aufhellung im Röntgenbild oder ein Haken der Sonde – externe, zervikale Wurzelresorptionen werden meist als Zufallsbefund diagnostiziert. Sie sind initial symptomlos und schwer zu diagnostizieren. In vielen Fällen bleibt die Resorption lange unentdeckt. Dabei ist die frühzeitige Diagnostik entscheidend für die Prognose des betroffenen Zahnes. Denn ist der Defekt erst einmal weit fortgeschritten, bleibt nur die Extraktion. Im folgenden Beitrag wird auf die Ätiologie, Diagnostik und die Therapie einer externen, zervikalen Resorption eingegangen und anhand eines Fallberichts der Behandlungsablauf detailliert dargestellt.
