Abstract

Epidemiological and clinical research has consistently demonstrated the high prevalence of and systematic link between substance-related disorders and childhood traumatic experiences. Problematic substance use and substance dependence can be seen as one of the most relevant causes and consequences of childhood traumatic experiences. This article provides an overview of the current evidence-base, underlying mechanisms and new integrative treatment approaches. Furthermore, it examines parental addiction as a crucial risk factor for childhood maltreatment.
