Professor Martin Chaplin

Born in Hertfordshire, England, he is married to Philippa Chaplin and the father of three children, Tim, Helen and Katy. He graduated in Chemistry from the University of Birmingham, in 1967. He completed his PhD, in July 1970, concerned with structural and biological studies on the glycans in human follicle stimulating hormone, within a collaborative project between the University of Birmingham and the Birmingham and Midland Hospital for Women. After two very fulfilling years teaching chemistry at Bunda College of Agriculture, Lilongwe, part of the University of Malawi, East Africa, he returned to the University of Birmingham as a Faculty Research Fellow to continue the work on the glycoprotein hormones and to initiate some enzyme technology research. His interest in these research areas continued during a Biochemistry lecturing post at the University of Leeds and a four-year seconded post as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Ghana, Legon, West Africa. Since 1985 he has been in the Department of Applied Science, London South Bank University, where he became Professor of Applied Science in 1992 and lectures widely in the areas of analysis, enzyme technology, proteomics and scientific method.

Professor Chaplin is a Chartered Chemist and has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry since 1990. He has authored over a hundred original scientific publications in peer reviewed journals and contributed many review articles and book chapters. During his multidisciplinary career, he has worked extensively on enzyme technology and carbohydrate analysis and has successfully mentored 23 PhD students. His current research interests lie mainly with aqueous systems, and he has particular interests concerning the properties of intracellular water and of liquid water at interfaces. He is the author of an extensive web-based resource concerned with the science behind the unusual properties of water (http://www.lsbu.ac.uk/water). He has an open mind for the progress of novel ideas in science, but driven solely by the quality of the scientific evidence. He hopes to use this knowledge and experience to ensure that a high standard of science is maintained in Homeopathy.
