Abstract

This chapter describes strategies for helping school-age children who stutter (i.e., children between the ages of 6 and 12 years) learn how to navigate the impact of stuttering on their communication and their lives as a whole. The treatment process is presented as a comprehensive approach that must be considered within the context of overall communication functioning; the overarching goal of therapy is to ensure that the child is able to speak freely and effectively, regardless of whether or not moments of stuttering are produced in the flow of speech. Because numerous approaches to stuttering therapy for school-age children have been described in the literature, we will provide readers with an overview of the general therapy process and its various components. In doing so, readers will learn how to identify relevant aspects of therapy for different children who stutter and how to select from and adapt available treatment options to meet the needs of each individual child. A set of targeted case examples, rather than a single, detailed case study, is used to demonstrate the steps in the clinical decision-making process so that readers can apply the general concepts underlying stuttering therapy to individual children.
