Abstract

Many tinnitus patients also have hyperacusis, a prevalent auditory disorder that can cause significant distress and affects the patient’s quality of life. All hyperacusis patients can describe specific sounds in their environment that are troublesome. Patients with hyperacusis may have very different complaints about the sounds and situations that they experience difficulty. There are four main symptoms that can be used to describe patients' hyperacusis experiences: (1) loudness, (2) annoyance, (3) fear, and (4) pain. Many patients will experience more than one of these symptoms, and the types of symptoms will vary from patient to patient. Although there are currently no cures available for hyperacusis, there are several treatment options that can be successful for patients, including counseling, sound therapy, filtered earplugs, medications for related symptoms, and relaxation exercises. The Hyperacusis Activities Treatment is a counseling program that includes education about hyperacusis, counseling on reactions to hyperacusis, and treatments to relieve symptoms such as sound therapy and relaxation exercises.
