Abstract

It is not exaggerating to say that femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) is probably the most controversial procedure in modern cataract surgery. Is there a real patient-centered clinical value to using it? If most cataract surgeons prefer not to use this new technology, why do we still have a significant number of surgeons use it and why do we write this chapter to recommend FLACS be listed as part of our residency training? What are the specific advantages of FLACS over conventional cataract surgery? Who are the good candidates for FLACS? What are the indications and the contraindications? Do we have solid studies in the literature to support its validation? Based on the LenSx platform (Alcon) we will discuss these basic clinical questions as an introduction for beginners.
