Significance

Ruthenium hydroxide supported on alumina (Ru(OH)x/Al2O3) was found to promote the transfer hydrogenation of allylic alcohols to saturated alcohols without any additive. Thus, the Ru(OH)x/Al2O3 catalyst was prepared from ruthenium(III) chloride, γ-Al2O3, and NaOH according to reported procedures (K. Yamaguchi, N. Mizuno Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2002, 41, 4538). The transfer hydrogenation of 1-octen-3-ol with isopropyl alcohol was carried out in the presence of 2 mol% of Ru(OH)x/Al2O3 to give 3-octanol in 94% yield. The Ru(OH)x/Al2O3 catalyst was recovered and reused three times without any loss of catalytic activity (95% yield for three times).
