Significance

InCl3/SiO2-catalyzed highly regioselective hydroarylation of styrenes with arenes affording 1,1-diarylalkanes was described. The InCl3/SiO2 catalyst was prepared by adding SiO2 (500 mg, 200-300 mesh) to a solution of InCl3 (1 mmol) in CHCl3 (10 mL) followed by evaporation of the solvent in vacuo. The hydroarylation of styrenes with arenes was carried out in the presence of 5 mol% of IrCl3/SiO2 under solvent-free conditions to give the corresponding 1,1-diarylalkane compounds in 50-95% yield with high regioselectivity (21 examples).
