Significance

Oxindole derivatives are interesting targets as potential pharmaceuticals. Few examples can be found for the synthesis of highly enantioenriched 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles (J. F. Hartwig and co-workers: J. Org. Chem. 2001, 66, 3402). The authors report on the synthesis of carbene ligands from readily available chiral starting materials and their use in the synthesis of highly enantioenriched oxindoles.
