Significance

Pentacycloanammoxic acid is a highly unusual C20 fatty acid isolated from the anaerobic microbe Candidatus brocadia anammoxidans. The Corey group reports the synthesis of the (+)-isomer of pentacycloanammoxic acid which makes extensive use of photochemical reactions, most notably the use of an asymmetric [2+2] cycloaddition to install the absolute stereochemistry.
