Significance

(+)-Brazilin is a micromolar telomerase inhibitor and has the ability to nick DNA making it a potential anti-cancer agent. (+)-Brazilin and related natural products have been isolated from Brazil wood trees found in regions around the equator. A synthesis of (±)-brazilin is reported in nine steps and 8.5% yield.
