Significance

The synthesis of optically active indole derivatives is important for the construction of more elaborate naturally occurring and potentially pharmaceutical agents. Most reports on the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with malonates are copper-catalyzed. The authors found a scandium catalyst with a chiral N,N′-dioxide ligand effective for this transformation.
