Summary

16 Species of Loranthaceae were investigated for the presence of toxic proteins. With regard to this character three groups of species may be discerned:

  • a) No toxic proteins are present. Their toxicity must be caused by other types of constituents (10 species).

  • b) Viscotoxin–like toxic principles seem to be present besides other toxins of still unknown structure (5 species).

  • c) Phoradendron serotinum contains the same type of basic, toxic proteins («viscotoxin») as Viscum album. The toxicity of representatives of group c seems to be caused by viscotoxins exclusively.
