Since ancient times, mankind has used plants as a valuable source of natural products to maintain human health and to treat or prevent disease. Common knowledge of the healing properties of medicinal plants and the respective natural products has been passed down through generations of human communities, and phytosciences, such as ethnopharmacology or phytotherapy, have nowadays developed into emerging multidisciplinary fields with almost unlimited sources. Unsurprisingly, there has been a growing trend over the last decade to seek herbal medicinal products as part of dental treatment, paralleled by a steadily growing global dental market with an average growth rate of around 6% per year. Previously considered empirical, recent data on the activity and biocompatibility of many plants have been scientifically validated, and plants and plant-derived compounds are being used or discussed as
